Event: Assistive Technology and Design
Posted on February 18, 2011 | 1 CommentLast week I had the rather lovely opportunity to speak at an event run by the College of Occupational Therapists (COT) looking at assistive technology and design. On arriving, I was very pleasantly surprised to see that I'd been billed on the agenda as the keynote opening, so no pressure there then! ; )
But before I tell you all about the event, I thought a good starting point would be to explain what we mean when talking about assistive technology...

One Month Before Heartbreak: Disability cuts come to the crunch
Posted on January 16, 2011 | 6 CommentsEnabled by Design is proud to support the One Month Before Heartbreak campaign. The brainchild of The Broken of Britain (AKA @BrokenOfBritain), which describes itself as a "non-party political campaign providing advocacy for physically & mentally disabled people of Great Britain and carers." By sharing the stories of people whose lives are affected by disability, they aim to protest against the swingeing cuts to disability related benefits and services being proposed.
We'd just like to say a very big WELL DONE to our team mate Kaliya Franklin (AKA @BendyGirl) and her Broken of Britain crew for putting in the time, energy and hard work to make this happen. We really do appreciate it!!!
It's so important to make each and every person's voice heard, together we can make a difference!

Enabled by Design introduces sugru…
Posted on June 15, 2010 | 2 CommentsWhat happens when you already own a product that you either find uncomfortable or difficult to use? Rather than throwing it away or burying it in the cupboard under the stairs, why not have a go at "hacking" and see what you come up with...
For those of you not already in the know, "hacking" is just another word for modifying an object in some way, be it to make it easier to use, look pretty, improve its functionality or make repairs. This is where sugru comes in...
Sugru is a bit like modeling clay, but here's the clever bit, it cures overnight at room temperature to become a tough, flexible silicone and is perfect for "hacking".
Here at Enabled by Design HQ we love the idea of sugru and are particularly interested in how it can be used to make things easier and safer for people to use.
