Can good design save the world?

This is the question that an article in this month’s issue of National Geographic is asking.

One Laptop per ChildFaced with environmental, well-being and health related challenges in developing countries, innovative designers are stepping up to the mark by creating well-designed yet affordable products to meet these needs.

The article features thirteen different life-changing concepts ranging from the One Laptop per Child scheme, which is working to provide school children in developing countries with affordable laptops, to the LifeStraw, a purifying straw that filters water to make it safe to drink.

So in answer to the question ‘can good design save the world?’ I would have to say that when applied to the very real challenges we’re facing, it is most definitely making a difference one project and step at a time.
