We are Enabled by Design: Meet the Keynote Speakers

We’re now into June, which means that there’s not long now until our very first event, “We are Enabled by Design“. We’ve been busy working away behind the scenes to get everything ready in time for our first foray into the event world. So while you’re counting down the days, here are the stories behind how our keynote speakers have inspired us, how we met them and most importantly how we persuaded them to come along and speak at our event…

Wayne Hemingway

wayne_hemingway_side.jpgI first became aware of Wayne
Hemingway’s work as the co-founder of fashion label Red or Dead, during my uni days in
Manchester (1998-2001). Over the years I’ve followed his work with Hemingway Design, from KiosKiosk to Roadrunner
foldaway bikes
to collaborating with Wimpey Homes to develop people
centred housing to a Vintage event at
and my favourite the playful modern take on the common or
garden water butt, Butt
. Then in July last year, Wayne Hemingway was speaking at the
Design Museum
as part of the Super Contemporary exhibition talk series
and I just couldn’t resist going along to find out more. After the talk I
plucked up enough courage to say hello and here we are today…

Little does Charles Leadbeater
know, that without him Enabled by Design most probably never would have
come to fruition. Why is this? Well it’s a bit of a long story, but
through Charles Leadbeater’s ‘We
, a book about mass collaboration, we met Anna Maybank, the
director of Social Innovation Camp.
As a result we entered the idea for Enabled by Design, coincidentally Charles was on the panel of judges, and went on to be
awarded first prize at the first ever Social Innovation Camp. So
Charles we owe you one, thank you! Since then we’ve been religiously
following his work on social innovation, personalisation and co-design
with great interest.

We’re dead chuffed that Wayne Hemingway and Charles Leadbeater will be joining us on the day and we’re hoping that you will be too. If you haven’t already registered and would like to come along, tickets are available here, but be quick they’re going fast and when they’re gone, they’re gone!
