Can Opener

by U_John, March 25, 2009 7:25 AM

Make: Culinare
Model: MajiCan

I always found the old style of can opener difficult to use, especially after they became worn, and dangerous because of the nasty jagged edge they leave. Ths side-cutting opener does away with most of the problems, and is warranted for a period of 5 years or so. Definitely a plus.

I also share a very positive experience with this type of can opener (although I have not tried this Culinare one). They seem to require less strength and they leave a cleaner cut.

However, because it cuts on the side of the can, it removes the top of the can. This means that the thicker, rounded border cans have on the top and bottom sides is removed as well. So, although the cut is cleaner, the edge is sharper.

Since I have tried this side-cutting openers I have never gone back to the other, more traditional style.

Now, if you suffer from lack of strength or shakiness on your hands, as my mum does, you may want to try an electric can opener. You just bring the can close to the device magnet and you press a button while you watch the can go round. And when the spin is complete, the machine is smart enough not to let the can drop :-) You just have to gently hold it and pull it downwards.
