Hands free umbrella
by Denise Stephens, 19 March 09
I walk with two crutches, which means that I don't have spare hands to carry/use an umbrella when it's raining. I currently just wear a hat, but this isn't ideal.

You used to get those umbrellas you wore on your head but they looked naff! Sounds like you need an extension on the top of one crutch to hold the umbrella shaft....but then it might move around too much?

This is actually covered by a Chinese patent! Abstract of CN 201171410 (Y) The utility model relates to a rainproof crutch which includes a crutch body and a handle. The crutch body is of a hollow tubular structure, a straight rod type umbrella is inserted inside the crutch body, and a screw thread at the bottom of the crutch body is connected with a column non-slip mat; an insertion slot is arranged below an arc section of the handle. In rainy days, the user unscrews the non-slip mat and takes out the umbrella from the crutch body, and then inserts the tail end of a supporting rod of the umbrella in the insertion slot of the handle so as to fix the umbrella after opening the umbrella, the user holds the handle and normally walks by the way that the underside of the crutch body contacts with the ground. The rainproof crutch has the advantages of simple structure, convenience and practicability, beautiful appearance, comprehensive functions, etc. It is true - there is no such thing as a new idea!
