Really compact foldaway seat
by Denise Stephens, 19 March 09
I have very weak legs and walk with two crutches. Therefore, I often need to sit down when my legs get tired. However, there aren't always seats available when I need one. It would be great if there was a really compact, lightweight seat that I could carry in my bag for when I need it most.

I have a three legged folding camp stool that works brilliantly for this. It has a case and carrying strap (though the strap is too short and we had to adapt it to carry cross-body). You can find similar items in most camping stores. Inexpensive too. In a similar vein, I need a folding stool that's much taller - like a bar stool. Anyone know of one? I sing in a choir and hate perching on a low chair whilst everyone is standing. HipWoman

I've seen a walking stick with built-in tripod and flip-out seat. It doesn't look brilliantly practical, which is why I haven't bought it yet - still, I might get it for the summer. They exist, but I haven't seen a baggable one.

Thanks omnijam. I'm not sure about the built in walking stick bit. Ideally I'd want to be able to carry it rather than walk with it, as I already use two crutches. Never enough hands!

Hi HipWoman! Thanks for your advice re the fold-away camping stool. Is your camping stool very low? Am looking for something that is average chair height really. All sounds very useful though, especially the fact you can fold it away and carry it in its bag. Love the fact you've adapted the strap so you can carry it across your body - always so much easier! Thanks again. Denise : )

Not sure if you solved it with the three-legged camping stool Denise but these are pretty amazing (light, strong and comfortable), though I'm not sure if anything like it is still in production! http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2008/12/17/folding-chair-also-serves-as-pillow/ (and I can't work out how on earth you can use it as a pillow!) If you're interested I can try to find out - or see if we can make one ourselves.
