Last weekend FutureGov‘s Dominic Campbell and Carrie Bishop flew the flag for team Enabled by Design on the SXSW stage while running a session on 3D Printing for people with disabilities. We’re extremely proud to share the slides and audio from the session below, with an excellent roundup by Carrie.

Enabled by Design at SXSW 2013 – Guest blog by Carrie Bishop

South by Southwest (SXSW) is one of the world’s foremost festivals of all things technology. From launching the latest hot apps to the Tomorrow’s World type tech we’ll be using in 20 years time, it’s the place to be for anyone interested in our digital future. Oh yeah, and did I mention it’s in Austin, Texas? Just one more reason to attend. Imagine our excitement, then, when Team Enabled by Design’s bid to speak at the event was accepted!

Following on from the Enabled by Design-athon last year, we’re still buzzing about the possibilities of 3D printing and have been working hard behind the scenes with IDEO to turn the winning ideas into working prototypes. Meanwhile the fantastic Playsettings is charging ahead as well. SXSW seemed like the ideal opportunity to share what we’ve been working on and take the lessons from the Design-athon to a bigger audience in the USA. Unfortunately Denise’s health meant she couldn’t make it, but Dom and I stepped into the breach to represent Enabled by Design.

Here is the audio and slides from the presentation we did:

The session was great fun and we had an audience of about 50, with some good representation from people with disabilities (SXSW isn’t a very accessible event to be honest). We took along some prototypes at various stages and people were pleased to be able to touch and feel the various objects. It was a great chance to prove to the tech community that there are important applications for 3D printing beyond making toys and dancing robots and we had some great feedback from people during and after the session.
Who knows if we’ll be selected again next year, but it would be fantastic to be able to go back in 12 months and show the world even more highly personalised products. Bring it on!
Big thanks to FutureGov’s Dominic Campbell and Carrie Bishop for doing such a great job representing Enabled by Design at SXSW 2013, it’s much appreciated!!!
