Following the success of last year’s Design Zone at the Mobility Roadshow, Enabled by Design and Such and Such Design will be joining forces once again to curate this year’s showcase of new and innovative designs that can help to support people to live as independently as possible.
The Mobility Roadshow is an annual three day event, taking place at the Peterborough Arena at the East of England Showground on 21 / 22 / 23 June 2012, showcasing all things mobility related; everything from adapted vehicles and charity stands, to 4 x 4 wheelchairs and mobility scooters. It has a wide range of features and activities to offer visitors, from wheelchair, scooter and vehicle test drives to demonstrations and sports including an accessible climbing wall, archery, wheelchair basketball, all-ability cycling and many more. Whatever you’re looking for, you’re sure to find something of interest!
Now in its second year, the Design Zone is set to be even bigger and better than the last, expanding to include a cafe area for that all important break from the hustle and bustle of the show and a good ol’ cuppa of course!
We’ve been busy beavering away behind the scenes pulling together a great collection of projects for this year’s Design Zone showcase, which is sponsored by Autoadapt and supported by the Royal College of Art’s Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design. This year we’re excited to be featuring designs from students at two leading design universities, both the University of Brighton (in conjunction with The Future Perfect Company‘s Designing for the Future competition) and Northumbria University, as well as from a number of charities and companies.
The Design Zone is also home to the ever popular Cool Wall, so we’ve been asking people to nominate the independent living products that they love the most and why. I’ve been adding the ones that we’ve received so far to the Enabled by Design website here, but don’t worry it’s not too late to make your nomination, just add a comment below, tweet, email or add a ‘Love’ post here marking it as a Design Zone Cool Wall nomination. Then it’s down to you to decide what will be announced as this year’s Design Zone coolest product, so come along to the Design Zone and vote for your favourites!
As you know we’re interested in exploring how we can modify or redesign products to make them more accessible, attractive and easier for people to use. So we’ve decided to run our own stand in the Design Zone where we’ll be talking to people about the things that they find difficult to use or do, with the aim of reworking existing products or designing new ones at a very exciting event that we’re putting on later this year (more details coming soon!). In the meantime, we’re putting together a list of the most popular products that could benefit from a “makeover” to help make people’s lives that little bit easier, so please do drop by, get involved and share your thoughts. We look forward to hearing from you soon! : )
